Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is hypnosis, exactly?
A: Hypnosis is simply an altered state of mind. It is a natural state, everyone goes in and out of hypnosis daily. Hypnosis enables a person to enter a deep state of relaxation. It isn't sleeping nor is it unconsciousness. You are aware of your surroundings and can participate and interact with the hypnotherapist.
Q: How does hypnosis work?
A: Hypnosis works by bypassing the conscious part of the brain and allowing the hypnotherapist to work directly with the subconscious mind. Because you are very relaxed your subconscious mind (or unconscious mind) is more open to suggestion and change at this time. Your subconscious is so powerful, much more powerful than your conscious mind and that is why it is the instrument for change, whether it's changing a belief and/or a behaviour.
Q: Can I be made to do something I don't want to do or say?
A: You cannot do or say anything you don't want to do. You are in control throughout the session. As hypnosis is really "self-hypnosis", you are always in charge. The hypnotherapist is there to guide and assist you in whatever way best serves your needs.
Q: How long does it take before I see results?
A: Obviously each person is different as is each reason for entering into hypnosis. However, studies indicate that anywhere from one to six sessions result in positive behaviour changes.
Q: Can hypnosis be used for anything besides smoking and weight loss?
A: Yes, hypnosis can be used for just about anything you can imagine. Some of the most common include stress reduction, fears, phobias, childbirth, pain control, self-esteem and motivation, public speaking, insomnia, anxiety and panic.
